KING STREET GROWTH, DECLINE AND REGENERATION

Jonathan Hooten traces the rise, fall and rise again of what has been one of the most important roads in Norwich.

King Street was one of the earliest and important roads in Norwich shadowing the river Wensum. It soon became a favoured site for merchants and many important people lived along the street in the early middle ages. When the rich moved out of the City to large estates in the surrounding County the buildings became sub-divided and later were replaced by industry in the 19th century, due to the closeness of rail and river used for transport. The destruction of the Second World War and the de-industrialisation of the later 20th century led to a decline in its fortunes. Recent attempts to gentrify the area has had mixed fortunes. All of this change has left us with a fascinating collection of buildings leaving it a street of great character.
