Calverton Church Open Day & Guided Heritage Walks

Calverton All Saints Church Open day will provide exhibition displays of Heritage items associated with the village and reflecting this years’ theme of ‘Routes, Networks & Connections’ including Calverton’s long links with St Guthlac’s Church in neighbouring Passenham. The displays will feature examples of Maps (both ancient and modern), evidence of Roman roads passing through the village, and links to many long-lost Roman settlements. There will be an audio-visual display covering the refurbishment and rehanging of Calverton’s bells along with demonstrations of bell ringing. The Church tower and roof will also be open for elevated views of the village and inspection of the new and old belfries from the spiral stairs.
The guided morning and afternoon walks will expand the theme to cover the wider medieval form of the village tracing the ancient track ways and fieldnames which made up the traditional 3-field system of agriculture from which is still preserved some of the best medieval ridge and furrow in the County. Along the way you'll also learn about perambulating priest, medieval fish farming, the swinging gibbet, Peter’s grave and the gruesome story of Grace Bennet’s murder at Calverton Manor.
We will also pick up on traces in the landscape of the older routes going back to Roman times and beyond and learn why many followed the same pathways to avoid the same problems.
The walks start and finish at the Church. Refreshments available.
