The Land between Two Rivers
The Main Place, Railway Drive, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 8RH
The Forest of Dean is an ancient historic area between the River Wye and River Severn. In prehistory these boundaries were also the routes followed between settlements. Bridges did not exist and the rivers would have been the preferred way of moving about.
We will look at how people lived and the formation of the Royal Hunting Forest in the time of King John. There are many things to explore and we intend to give a flavour of how life has changed over the centuries.
There were influences from the Druids, the Celts and the Romans and centuries later King John. In 1802 Lord Horatio Nelson's visit and letter to the King resulted in planting of oaks, much loved by local people but sadly in decline. The roles of the Verderers and the Deputy Gaveller will also be covered in our conversation.
