Visit the Bush Hotel

“Bush” as an inn sign dates back to the Romans who hung vine leaves, the sign of Bacchus, outside their Tabernae. In Britain’s cold climate a bush was substituted.
Farnham’s Bush Hotel is reputed to have existed since the 14th century, but the first documentary evidence comes in the early 16th century. In the 17th century the old estate of 11 acres included the whole of what is now South Street and was known as Gostreeds. As shown in a 19th century plan it extended right down to the river and included a cricket ground.
Today’s Oak Lounge, the old bar, has some interesting features, a very rare indoor sundial painted on the ceiling, and a series of frescoes on a wall. These were discovered in 1931, and date back to the 18th or 19th century.
Information sheets will be available.
Note: the Oak Lounge can be booked for private events; it is recommended that visitors phone to check if it is free.
