Tours of the Historic Library

Hawkshead Grammar School Museum, Main Street, Hawkshead, Cumbria, LA22 0NT

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Hawkshead Grammar School Museum is opening up the historic Library, especially for Heritage Open Days! The library is usually closed to the public, so this is a great opportunity to see inside and hear more about the people who built the collection.

On 8th, 9th and 13th September 2024, visitors will be able to step inside Hawkshead Grammar School's historic library, which is usually closed to the public. It is one of few remaining historic school libraries which remains in-situ, inside the school building (and room) it was set up in. The library houses approximately 1600 books, some dating back to the 16th Century. Our guide will give visitors a 20 minute talk about the library, with a tour, and will be able to answer questions.

The school was founded in 1585 and was open until 1909. The library collection sheds light on the subjects which were studied at school, as well as demonstrating the changes in book binding & styles of books over time. The books reveal more about the students who were using them, as they contain lots of doodles, notes and annotations (and sometimes little witty rhymes).

Famous students who attended the school, such as William Wordsworth and William Pearson, donated books to the library after they had left the school. Alongside the talk and tour of the library, we will have children's/family activities linking with our special opening of the library. There is no need to book a place, just arrive at the museum at a time that suits you (between 1100 and 1600) and join the next talk and try out the activities!

Accessibility details

There is one small step into the entrance downstairs, wheelchairs and pushchairs/prams are welcome downstairs (but be aware they will need to be lifted up the entrance step). Unfortunately, we do not have wheelchair or pushchair/pram access to the upstairs of the building which is where the library is located. This is due to the historic nature of the building. We do not have any public toilets available on site, but there are some public toilets across the main road.
