Arthur Wilson was one of Hull’s wealthiest, philanthropic and admired, Victorian businessmen.

This talk, by Dennis Chapman, covers his eventful lifetime, during which he built up his family’s shipping business in the City - eventually growing into the world famous, Hull-based, Ellermans Wilson Line.

Arthur’s wealth had enabled him to build one of the area’s finest mansions at Anlaby - Tranby Croft - with it surviving to the present day, as a splendid example of Victorian architecture. It has a fascinating history of its own with the Wilson family visitors having included Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales (around whom the infamous Baccarat betting scandal centred). Little known was Tranby Croft’s use as a base for a successful top secret Wartime operation.

The fully illustrated talk follows the route of Arthur’s funeral procession with rare images taken at the time and, finally, reveals the eventual outcome for his Shipping company and his beloved Tranby Croft
