A talk by local historian Robert Bell on the theme of Routes Connections and networks

Routes, connections and networks into the future. In keeping with the theme for 2024, this talk will consider Hull’s location and local topography as a basis for settlement and an impressive diversity of industries since the City’s first charter in 1299.

Some consider Hull as being at the ‘end of the line’; a false perception when we consider that the port city is in the middle of multiple trading routes, supply chains and their eco systems worldwide Connections made over generations are re-considered to assess whether they can be revived and even become the basis for fresh digital connections.

We will consider the nature of networks in terms of trade and the risks associated with connectivity on an industrial scale way beyond cargoes - in terms of disease, seditious ideas and even innovation.

We will close with a review of enabling technologies through the ages and, consider how digital applications and all forms of AI can now enhance ‘future proofing’ the city, give youth a reason to return and stay instead of seeking their futures elsewhere.
