Our unique Grade II listed church & grounds will be open for visitors to view and learn about our history and role in the community, past and present. Old maps and records chart the evolution of Hurst from hamlet to village to township.

St John the Evangelist is the only Anglican place of worship in the Parish of Hurst. It was consecrated by the first bishop of Manchester in 1849. Oldham Whittaker, a local mill owner funded the building of the church. Sheldon was the original architect.
The north and south transepts, Whittaker Chapel, tower and spire were added in 1862. This architect was George Shaw of Saddleworth and the unique dark oak reredos, panelling and artefacts, as well as the stained-glass windows, are all his work.

Our theme for this year is "Routes and Connections" and there will be information available on the history of Hurst and St John’s – displays, leaflets and talks.
Our famous stuffed owl that lived in the church in the 1930s will be on display - hear his story!
Come and see our fascinating plant fossil display ‘The Rainforest under our Feet’
Church Registers will be available for family tree searches.
