Pykenham's Gatehouse

Pykenham's Gatehouse, built in the late 15th century, is one of the earliest domestic buildings in the town, and has witnessed more than 500 years of Ipswich history. Originally the entrance to the house built by William Pykenham, Archdeacon of Suffolk, it has seen the comings and goings of some 20 generations of Ipswich people - at first through the North Gate and along Northgate Street beside the brook (now running underground), and more recently past the imposing library built opposite it during the last century of its vigilance. It was restored in 1983 and since then maintained by The Ipswich Building Preservation Trust.
Volunteers will be on duty on Saturday 7th and Sunday 9th September so there is a chance to chat, explore and learn more.
