One of Middleton's 'Golden Cluster' of historic buildings, this Arts and Crafts inspired church and former schoolrooms is a masterpiece designed by Edgar Wood (1860-1935

Long Street Methodist Church and Schools were built in 1899. It is an outstanding Grade II* listed building incorporating Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and modern stylistic elements into a magnificent whole. The writers of the latest Pevsner guide describe the interior of the church as a 'knockout', and the adjacent school is pure Arts and Crafts with a lovely 'outdoor room' garden accessed through an Art Nouveau gateway topped by a cubic modern sculpture.

New for 2024, every open day will have an exhibition of paintings 'Edgar Wood and his contemporaries' plus work by local artists. In addition:

Wednesday 11th - museum staff from Touchstones will bring exhibits from their collection of Local History artefacts.
Saturday 7th - a family art workshop 11.00 - 3.30
Sunday 8th - sketching with local artist Steve Whitworth 2.00 - 4.00 / A guided tour of the Edgar Wood buildings in the Conservation Area approx one miles for a hour leaving at 2pm
Saturday 14th - Touchstones 'Collections on Tour' will be in residence.
Sunday 15th - sketching with local artist Steve Whitworth 2.00 - 4.00/ Music recital by The Friday Ensemble (harp and flute) at 2.00 and 3.00

Directions:
We are situated on the main road (A664) from Middleton to Rochdale, a quarter of a mile north of the town centre. We are on the 17 bus route between Manchester and Rochdale. If arriving by car, park for free (but ticket required from machine) on nearby Market Place car park M24 6AE or St. Leonard's Square, New Lane. M24 6DJ and walk through the small park.

Accessibility details

Access to the main doors are by a flight of 10 steps. There are some steps in the garden quadrangle and 4 steps between the nave and the chancel. Only the church is open to visitors on both Saturdays owing to private events taking place in the schoolrooms from 12 noon onwards. Note: there is no disabled/wheelchair access to the church chancel on Saturday afternoons for the reason stated. Disabled drop off at other times is at the rear of the church in Lever Street.
