The site and money for the gallery were donated to the city by?Thomas Ferens, after whom it is named. The architects were?S. N. Cooke and E. C. Davies. It was opened in 1927, restored and extended in 1991 and has recently undergone extensive refurbishment. Following its reopening in 2017. visitors can now enjoy Pietro Lorenzetti's stunning panel painting, Christ between Saints Paul and Peter (c.1320).
