Wollaton Walled Garden Project

Built in the 1780s the walled garden featured heated brick walls and a large conservatory. Later, in the 19th century, the garden was improved with the addition of a complex series of heated glasshouses in which were grown exotic fruits and plants. The garden was sold to the Nottingham City Council, along with Wollaton Hall and the rest of the estate, in 1925. It fell into disuse in the early 1990s and the garden went back to nature.
In late 2018, a group of volunteers, coordinated by Friends of Wollaton Park, started helping to restore, renovate and reuse what had become the ‘secret’ walled garden. The project aims to conserve the garden’s heritage, offer a place for historic and traditional horticulture, and provide opportunities for learning and education.
Volunteers will be working in the garden during the open days and visitors will be able to take self-guided tours, aided by numerous information points.

Accessibility details
It is possible to get wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs around the Walled Garden. However, visitors should note that much of the ground is grass covered and uneven, though it is mowed short. Stout shoes are recommended.
