Winterbourne Parish Church
Winterbourne Parish Church, Church Lane, Winterbourne, Bristol, Bristol, BS36 1SE
The parish church with its 14th century tower and spire, is the centre of a lively community. It contains much of interest. There are important 14th century wall paintings, several effigies and a brass, all commissioned by Sir Thomas Bradeston, a friend and supporter of Edward III. Winterbourne Medieval Barn next door to the church also has links to Sir Thomas Bradeston. Stained glass includes a First World War memorial and a 1973 window by the internationally renowned Alan Younger. The 14th century tower contains a ring of six bells, the heaviest weighing just over 1 ton. The bells were all cast in 1757 by William Evans of Chepstow and, unusually none have been recast or replaced since. The churchyard is maintained as a space of reflection for all and as a haven for wildlife with wild flowers and notable yew trees. There are several interesting and finely carved tombstones from the 18th century, some listing occupations such as salt refiner or felt maker.
