Winslow History Walk: Railway, Workhouse, Baptists
Starts at Winslow Community Library, Park Road, Winslow, Buckinghamshire, MK18 3DN
In Winslow Community Library (open from 1300 onwards) you can see books and information about the history of Winslow. From there we’ll go to what remains of the Workhouse, designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1835. We’ll look at how Winslow changed when the railway arrived in 1850, with the creation of large villas in Station Road and four purpose-built pubs. You can also see examples of Arts and Crafts and Victorian Gothic architecture.
We’ll go to the site of the original station (now demolished) and look at progress on the new station (scheduled to open in 2025). You’ll also hear the stories behind some abandoned land and a hidden path. The walk will end at the Winslow Tabernacle, built by the Baptists in 1864 and extended in 1880. You can look inside this unusual building with its gallery and its font for adult baptisms.
