Wincobank Chapel and Iron Age Hillfort
132 Wincobank Avenue, Wincobank, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S5 6BB
In 1817 Joseph and Elizabeth Read established a chapel in the coach house of Wincobank Hall. They also started a Sunday school in the laundry-room and eventually raised funds for a new school building still in use today as a chapel and community centre. Come and enjoy browsing through our fascinating archive of memorabilia, photographs and documents from over a century of community activity. For the past two years, work has been progressing to refurbish the adjacent chapel house, originally the school teacher's house, as an additional community facility and heritage centre. This building has a history of its own. There will be an illustrated talk in the chapel at 1pm. No booking needed. Volunteers will also be on hand during the day with informal information. There will be an exhibition of Victorian and Edwardian household artefacts and refreshments will be available.
Friends of Wincobank Hill are an established campaigning and conservation group who work with Sheffield Rangers to preserve and protect the nearby Scheduled Monument of Wincobank Hillfort, one of the few English Iron Age Hillforts within a city boundary. The Friends will be at the Chapel with archaeological information and craft activities, and there will be a guided walk up to the nearby hillfort at 2.30pm. The round walk will take approximately one hour.

The Chapel site is fully accessible. However, the walk to the hillfort is quite steep over rough paths and unfortunately, is not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
