Widnes RUFC Centenary Heritage Event
Heath Road, Widnes, Cheshire, WA8 7NU
Our Club President, Neil Ankers, invites you to join him at the first formal event of our centenary season. Neil’s third cousin, Bill Ankers, was one of the founding members of Widnes Secondary School Old Boys RFC in 1924. We aim to celebrate our long history and look forward to a thriving future for rugby union in our town with the following three events.
1. A Six Mile Walk around our Industrial Town’s Sporting Heritage to celebrate 100 years since our club was founded in 1924. Starting at 11:00 am, walkers will leave our Heath Road headquarters armed with a 24 page guide to the walking route, printed with Community Grant Support from “Halton 50”. The walk is expected to take 2 – 3 hours.
The walking route passes numerous local landmarks which played a part in the history of our club which became Old Widnesians in 1925 before changing its name to Widnes RUFC in 1959.
2. A Centenary photomontage, featuring photos dating back to 1924, will feature in an enhanced Heritage Display. Visitors will be encouraged to visit the display, which will feature videos, photos and artefacts in 3 separate rooms. with club members on hand to answer questions.
3. Our mini and junior rugby players will be participating in training sessions and display games during the day.
Each Heritage Open Day visitor will be offered complimentary copies of our three Widnes RUFC books plus a commemorative half pint glass, engraved with the club's logo.
