Wholestone Moor Heritage Walk
Nettleton Hill Road, Scapegoat Hill, Golcar, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD7 4NH
Participants will walk a circular route shown on a map given out on the day. This is a hilltop walk which in part follows the Kirklees Way. It crosses fields and moorland and passes through woodland. Reference will be made to recent archaeological excavations, antiquarian maps and texts, and early OS maps. Jeffery's map of 1772 is particularly informative, and routes from the 13th to the 19th Century, and possibly even earlier, will be mentioned as well.
There are two resting places with a bench on the route. Conditions are dependent on the weather. If it rains, shoes can become soaked in the field. Elsewhere, the footpaths are stony and uneven. There are two low stiles and two high stiles to negotiate. Walking shoes or strong trainers are advised. There is also little/no cover, and sun protection may be needed. There are no nearby toilets, unless you wish to visit the Pennine Manor Hotel.

The route crosses farmland which is predominantly given over to sheep farming. Any dogs must be on a lead. There are 4 stiles to negotiate two of which are high (ladder stiles).
There is the nearby Pennine Manor Hotel at the start and end of the walk, which participants may wish to use privately as customers. On the walk itself there are no toilet facilities. Participants may wish to cut the walk short by stopping at the half way point and returning by the same route. A risk assessment document has been prepared and and will be made available to participants on booking a place. A register will be taken on site and participants will be required to sign and confirm that they have read the risk assessment document.
