LCA Chairman Simon Ritchie will talk about Accurate GPS systems and why you might be interested in them
Equipment is now available that can use navigation satellites such as GPS to find your position within two centimetres. It's been around for about twenty years but lately it's become cheap enough to be used by a much wider audience such as architects, builders, estate agents and even our local archaeological society.
If you are not one of those people, why should you be interested? As the poet Robert Frost said "Good fences make good neighbours". In Surrey, even a modest house sits on a very valuable patch of land. If you own a house here, you want an accurate record of your boundaries, but your Land Registry record may be shockingly vague. Technology that makes it cheap and easy for a surveyor to produce a better record promises fewer and less expensive boundary disputes.
The technology has many other uses and Simon will use this talk to propose an interesting school project that's only possible now that we have affordable accurate GPS systems.
