West Midlands Police Museum Collections Store Tour

West Midlands Police Museum, The Lock Up, 40 Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, West Midlands, B4 6BJ

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A chance to peek at our archives to see the items we don't show the visitors.

The West Midlands Police Museum now lives in the old Victorian Lock Up on Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham city centre. In the atmospheric setting of a building that was opened in 1891, the museum houses items and tells the story of policing in the West Midlands, going right back to its founding in the 1830s. On this special tour, our Museum Manager will take you behind the scenes into our archives where we host some of the oldest and most precious items we have. Things you will see include some of the very earliest mugshots taken in the UK, criminal records going back over 150 years (including members of some notorious 19th century gangs) and some of the more delicate items that are unsuitable to be on display. Whilst the tour and necessary access to the site is included in the ticket, the ticket does not include general admission to the museum.
