Join local historian, David Walshe (Secret Sand Land) as he takes you on a walking tour across Southport: From Churchtown to Birkdale and back! (return journey optional)

David Walshe, aka 'Secret Sand Land', will 'Walk the Churchgate' as part of the 2024 Heritage Open Days theme, 'Routes-Networks-Connections'. The Churchgate or Kirkgate, is believed to have been one of the oldest tracks in Lancashire, with only a small section of the original route still surviving however, David will lead you as close to the original path as possible, in some cases following the exact course, talking local history during the entire route! Part one of the walk is Churchtown to Birkdale, and will start outside The Hesketh Arms in Churchtown and finish outside The Crown in Birkdale. Part Two is Birkdale to Churchtown via the same route. If you like walking you can always opt to do both legs of the journey.

Please email [email protected] stating how many places and if participating on either Part One (Churchtown to Birkdale), Part Two (Birkdale to Churchtown) or Return Journey. Please note: One part of the route is approx 4 miles and includes climbing up & down steps. The total length if doing the return journey will therefore be 8 miles with a short break at The Crown in between.
