WALK 2: The Willerby Heritage Trail
Meet at National Westminster Bank in Willerby Square, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU10
Once a farming community established by Scandinavian settlers in the 9th century, Willerby has now become a suburban community of some 8000 people. It began this trajectory some 300 years ago when Hull merchants who had gained great wealth through maritime trade began to migrate from the town into the surrounding countryside where they built great mansion houses. A number of these houses still exist in Willerby. Further expansion of the village came with the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, followed by the construction of Kingston Road in the 1920s, which encouraged a housebuilding boom. The walking tour along Main Street, Willerby, led by local historian Francis Davies, follows the newly established Willerby Heritage Trail. This focuses on the development of Willerby from farming community to suburb during the Georgian and Victorian periods.
