Victoria Hall
Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6DP
Enjoy a tour of the Victoria Hall, including areas not usually open to member of the public.
First begun in 1898 and opened in 1901, the Victoria Hall was funded by a mixture of Public Subscription and finance from the Urban District Council, and was designed by John Hutton of Kendal.
The building is constructed of snecked limestone rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings under a slate roof. It is two storeys in height. Having a six window range with transomed and mullioned windows, the doorways are round arched with pilasters which curve forwards to support open pediments. Above the first, second and sixth windows of the front façade are shaped gables with ball finials, while above the central windows is a wider gable which has a ball finial with spikes.
The interior of the building retains many original features including door handles, finger plates, an iron staircase and beautiful stained glass skylights in the Main Hall. Both the Hall and old Council Chamber have fine original plasterwork friezes and the balcony is also ornamented with work of a similar calibre.
Backstage facilities and a kitchen are later additions.
Refreshments will be available in the hall.
