Come and find out about the Dieppe-Holywell underwater telegraph cable, one of the first to reach the UK! It became part of a network of cables run by the London-Paris telegraph service. In 1922 the cable terminal was removed from the beach and rehoused in a specially designed building in the newly landscaped Italian Gardens. It carried on transmitting until 1940 when the decision was made to sever the cable as it presented a risk to national security!

Please note that the pathways down to the Italian Gardens are quite steep although there is also access up from the promenade which is less so.
