Tunbridge Wells Walks: Travel and Transport

Meet outside The Amelia Scott, Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 1AW

  • 10 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

An evening circular walk around the top end of the town linking various historic locations associated with travel and transport: buses, bicycles, horse-drawn transport, motor manufacture, travel agent, carrier, inventions, even a link to aviation

Tunbridge Wells has historic associations with many forms of transport. Our walk takes us from the eighteenth century to the present day exploring the history of buildings and locations people pass everyday, unaware of their fascinating history. We delve into horse-drawn transport for visitors to the Wells; bicycles (and cycling tuition for the ladies of the town); buses; motor manufacture (including one firm with a royal warrant); wartime aviation manufacture; a carrier's business which traded here for over a hundred and thirty years; a nineteenth century business meeting the needs of travellers and still trading at its early location in the town today; and two inventions associated with transport.
