Tunbridge Wells Walks: Travel and Transport

Tunbridge Wells has historic associations with many forms of transport. Our walk takes us from the eighteenth century to the present day exploring the history of buildings and locations people pass everyday, unaware of their fascinating history. We delve into horse-drawn transport for visitors to the Wells; bicycles (and cycling tuition for the ladies of the town); buses; motor manufacture (including one firm with a royal warrant); wartime aviation manufacture; a carrier's business which traded here for over a hundred and thirty years; a nineteenth century business meeting the needs of travellers and still trading at its early location in the town today; and two inventions associated with transport.

- Meeting outside the Amelia Scott (entrance on Civic Way) at the junction of Mount Pleasant Road and Monson Road. Buses stop here at the War Memorial, just below the Amelia Scott. There are car parks at Crescent Road and Meadow Road (night time rate applies from 1800). If coming by car, please pay attention to streets in the vicinity where vehicle access is restricted during the day.

The walk route is along pavements and paths in the town centre. Please note that the centre of Tunbridge Wells is somewhat hilly and so might not be easy for some wheelchair and pushchair users. There are accessible toilets at the Amelia Scott, the start point of the walk, but please note that the building closes at 1800.
