Transporting Lewes the Railway and Lewes Priory

Priory Cottage, Cockshut Road, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 3PR

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person

Chris Grove will lead participants around The Lewes Priory site to highlight the impact of the railway and the discoveries that helped the understanding of one of the largest buildings in the town .

The Lewes to Brighton railway was built by John Urpeth Rastrick at the height of the Railway Boom between 1844 and 1846. It followed the building of the London to Brighton railway although its construction had been delayed by an unsuccessful legal challenge over the route by the Verrall family, who lived at the nearby Southover Manor.
