Tout Quarry where Art and Environment meet
Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve, The Memory Stones, Priory Corner, Portland, Dorset, DT5 2LN
A journey through time descending into Tout Quarry Sculpture Trust & Nature Reserve with every footstep equivalent to one million years where the geology underlies the ecology on which we depend to the Jurassic sea floor of the quarry. You will discover the work of well-known artists, including Antony Gormley, whose site specific works have created vantage points where art, environment, geology, quarrying and architecture meet.
This mysterious 400-year-old hand worked quarry with its labyrinths and gullies, combines the balance of elements of sea, sky and stone was saved in 1983 by the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust, as one of the UK Sculpture Parks, and is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), with rare butterflies and orchids.
The quarry has become a well-established creative and educational resource open to all that keeps alive the heartbeat of the island, continuing the hand skills of carving stone into the future, alongside an annual programme of activities in collaboration with the Dorset Wildlife Trust.
