Visit this unique parish church, a Grade 1 listed heritage site which dates back to the 12th century.

St Mary de Haura is the parish church of New Shoreham and dates from 1103. The largest church between Brighton and Worthing it is a Grade 1 listed building for both its historical and architectural distinctiveness. In his book 'England’s Thousand Best Churches', Simon Jenkins describes it as “a magnificent church with a superb Choir, a textbook of comparative 12th century style.” It sits in the centre of the lovely Sussex town in its large churchyard which with it lovely trees, quiet ambience and seating make it an attractive place to pause and ponder. It is well used by townspeople and visitors. Features of the church the tour will highlight include Romanesque and transitional Gothic architecture, mediaeval graffiti, two Kempe stained-glass windows and a war memorial which honours the only RAF serviceman awarded the Victoria Cross in the Second World War. The church tours have been arranged in partnership with the Shoreham Society which itself is putting on a stunning range of Heritage Open Days events.

Location & directions

St Mary de Haura, Church Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5DQ

Directions:
The church is in the centre of the attractive seaside town of Shoreham-by-Sea where there are plenty of places to park nearby. The town is also well served by public transport - buses and its own train station. Visitors are welcome to visit the church which is open every day. It is very close to restaurants, tea & coffee shops, car parks and public toilets. There is no obligation to go on one of the tours, you are welcome to visit any day. The tours will last one hour and will suit the gently curious rather than the expert on mediaeval churches (but of you are an expert, do visit and make yourself known, we'd love to meet you!). As well as visiting this remarkable church, the town's Shoreham Society is putting on a fabulous range of events as part of Heritage Open Days.
