Built on the line of the Roman Wall, this house was once owned by some of the most powerful people on Tyneside.
Known as home of a 17th Century Mayor Sir William Creagh, and leaders of the community, it was famed as the City's first Assembly House where the elite gathered for entertainment. It stands now as an 18th Century country house in the middle of the city theatrically decorated in homage to both the Roman Empire and Georgian Imperialism. Charles Avison performed here in 1735 and plans are in place for this to continue as venue for art events and exhibitions. See https://newcastle-arts-centre.co.uk/55westgateroad/
