Tolhouse Gaol

Enjoy the displays and hands-on activities and find out about the history of this 12th Century medieval merchant’s house, which was transformed into one of the town’s most important civic buildings.

Visit one of the oldest prisons in the country and explore Great Yarmouth’s story of crime and punishment. Discover the fate of thieves, smugglers, witches, pirates and murderers, when punishment included transportation and execution.

Accessibility details

There are a lot of steps and uneven floor surfaces. Access for people with mobility issues and wheelchairs is possible but has to be booked in advance, due to an extra member of staff needing to be present to operate the lift. (The lift cannot be used unless prior booking made as it links to the library building). For any queries please phone 01493 858900 or on days the Tolhouse is closed you can contact Time and Tide 01493 743930. There are no toilet facilities in the Tolhouse Gaol - there are some in Great Yarmouth Library next door which can be accessed during normal library opening hours.
