The West Gate
The West Gate, Westgate Street, Southampton, Hampshire, SO14 2AY
From 6 to 8 September, we will be opening the West Gate, so that visitors can see inside all three of Southampton’s surviving medieval gatehouses on the same day. Southampton has the most impressive medieval town walls in the country – standing over 10 metres tall in places.
The West Gate is used for temporary exhibitions organised by See Southampton and includes displays on the provisioning of the Mayflower and D-Day. Find out more about the recent repairs to the building that uncovered evidence of the last major repair works in 1937.
We will be open from 10:00 – 16:00 (last entry at 15:30) and a maximum capacity of 50.
Unfortunately, as the gatehouse is above one of the gateways into the old town there are steep steps up to the venue. There are also no facilities at this venue.
Southampton’s other two surviving gatehouses that will be open at the same time are the Bargate and God’s House Tower.
