The United Church - Historical Background for Non-Conformists in Warminster
George Street, Warminster, Wiltshire, BA12 8QA
We will be opening our premises on Sunday 8th, Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th September from 2pm to 5pm. We have a small paved garden and a friendly foyer where we will be serving Cream Teas to support Christian Aid during your visit if you like.
There will be flowers and greenery in the church if you or any young people would like to make a posy or small flower arrangement to take home to remember your visit or to leave in the church for other visitors to enjoy. Our stained glass comes from the United Reformed Congregational Chapel when they joined with the Methodist people to make us all even more united. Children and adults would be welcome to draw or colour a copy of the Stained Glass window.
Our historic records will be displayed around the church. The United Church on George Street has records dating back to 1770 when Methodism started up on The Common, Warminster. We have applied to the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre to have some of the old records available for you to explore such as the Baptism register from 1772 and the unofficial marriage register from 1873-1899. We still have the original ‘Minstrel Gallery’ from where congregation members could follow the worship.
In 2004, on the Chapel’s 200 year anniversary, a comprehensive booklet was compiled, by the late Mr David Dodge, highlighting the fascinating history of the dissenters and the dedicated.
Photos can be taken.
You will be made welcome.
