The Pilgrim Trail Walk
Meet in the car park at St Giles Church, Portishead Drive, Tattenhoe, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK4 3ES
Celebrate the fifth birthday of The Pilgrim Trail by walking the entire 8.5 mile linear route with Nicky Kenny, who is one of the team of three who developed the trail in 2019. Starting at St Giles Church in Tattenhoe (which has many stones from the original Snelshall Priory site) and ending at the chapel of St Mary at Bradwell Abbey, where a medieval family fun day will be taking place, the route will take approximately four to five hours to walk, with a rest and lunch stop midway at The Talbot Inn in Shenley. The trail begins by dipping south to explore the beautiful parkland of Tattenhoe Valley before joining an old route, along the western edge of Milton Keynes. The trail takes in many medieval sites, along an imagined pilgrimage route through the city. Weaving its way through Shenley and Loughton, the trail then heads along the Loughton Valley, past lakes and more beautiful parkland until reaching the pilgrim chapel of St Mary at Bradwell Abbey, where inside there are a series of medieval wall paintings, unique in England, which depict four keeling figures, thought to be pilgrims.
The route covers some areas of rough ground, which may be muddy in wet weather and goes over a stepped railway bridge. However the trail is never far from redways and grid roads so alternative routes can be easily navigated.
