“The old inner port of Chester, the Shipgate, and 19th to 20th century changes”

Hydro- Electric station, Castle Drive, Chester, Cheshire, CH1 1SL

  • 13 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

The walk will explore the old inner port of Chester which was removed to make way for an expansion of the Castle Gaol in 1830.

Meeting by the former Hydro- Electric Power station opposite the Bridgegate, by the Old Dee Bridge. Looking at how the expansion of the Gaol involved demolishing part of the city wall, along with the Shipgate, which provided access to the port from Shipgate Street. The locations of the lost structures will be explained. The gaol itself was demolished in 1890, and after a period as a parade ground, County Hall, now the Wheeler Building, was erected in the 1940s, and Castle Drive created. The walk describes the past landscape.
