The Old Booking Hall, Haltwhistle Railway Station
The Old Booking Hall, Haltwhistle Station, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE49 9HN
Haltwhistle Railway Station has been described as 'one of the best examples of a Georgian railway station still in use today'. Come and discover the genius of Thomas Edmondson, whose invention of the card ticket in 1838 was quickly adopted across the UK and the world. Issue your own reproduction Edmondson ticket in the 1855 Ticket Office. Guided walks, through a pedestrian tunnel to the impressive 'Alston Arches' railway viaduct of 1851 will be available.
Our brand new Lyric and Line exhibition will be in the Old Booking Hall. The exhibition tells the story of the award winning project, led by singer-song writer Gareth Davies-Jones
The 1901 signal box will be open to visitors. See how far a signaler can see, and learn about mechanical signaling. (Please note, access to the box is via a step staircase)
Remember to have a look at the exhibition on the five surrounding parishes in the waiting room on the Newcastle bound platform, and on the Carlisle bound platform, there is a new exhibition on Hadrian's Wall, with some stunning posters.
Listen to some of the stories of what it was like to grow up in the Station Master's house.
Edmondson, our sheep from @illumsheep will be on hand to welcome visitors and encourage entries to our free competition.
Feeling chilly? Why not knit a free scarf on our cycle-knitting machine?
At the end of your visit, treat yourself to a cup of coffee in the Water Tower cafe!
