Find out more about Historic England listed St. Mark’s Church with its unique murals painted by Kitty Milroy.

On the death of the Rev Andrew Milroy, the Milroy family came to live in Upper Hale in 1902. After training at The Slade School of Art, Kitty started work on the chancel walls in 1911. Using her faith and clear influences from the Arts and Crafts movement, she was able to realise her vision, completing the work in 1920. The paintings suffered a major catastrophe in the 1940s from water damage and over subsequent years deteriorated further until the position had become critical. In 2018, Rector Lesley Crawley & Nick Seversway, a local Picture Restorer, began raising funds for their restoration, leading to a full cleaning and restoration project carried out last year by the esteemed conservators Rickerby and Shekede.
