In December, 1938, over 500 mostly Jewish children arrived in Lowestoft from Vienna, escaping Nazi oppression. This talk will document the events that led to them leaving, their journey to England and the role that Lowestoft played in welcoming them.

On 12 January 2023 a new panel was unveiled at Lowestoft train station commemorating the role that Lowestoft played in rescuing hundreds of children (mostly Jewish children) from Nazi persecution and probable death. The panel contains details of the children's journey across Europe by both rail and steamship, their arrival in Lowestoft where they were met by the mayor, and information relating to the circumstances which prompted their evacuation. Lowestoft Journal also gave permission for the panel to include part of the original newspaper article featuring the Kindertransport arrival from an edition published in December 1938, which included a special greeting published in both German and English.

Content for the panel was researched by amateur historian and town councillor Andy Pearce who will give the talk. He will describe the events that led to this extraordinary evacuation, the children's journey, the role of Lowestoft and the children's subsequent resettlement in different parts of England.

This story has particular resonance for this year's Heritage Open Days with its theme of 'Routes - Networks - Connections' not only documenting the routes that the children made from Vienna, Austria to Lowestoft, England but also the connections that we now have to people, cities and countries in Europe and how we played a small role in welcoming and providing a new home to children who needed it in the past.
