The History of The Magdalen Chapel

The exhibition traces the history of the Chapel from its origins to the present day - serving the adjoining hospice (hospital), a refuge for lepers, in the 12th c. and then for the mentally ill from the 16th to early 20th c's., before becoming a place of worship serving the local community. In addition to the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the delightful Magdalen Chapel Garden, the graveyard with its wonderful view over Bath, and the haunting sculpture display by Martin Elphick, "The Casting Out".

Saturday 14th September is our Open Day, when there will also be a talk by the Chaplain, and madrigals.

Single step entry to Chapel porch; and out into graveyard. Single toilet accessible down a flight of stairs.

Additional information

Dropping off and limited 2hr parking available on Holloway. Access possible outside given hours for parties of 4 by arrangement. If coming by bus from the city centre; take the No 4, 4a, or 4b from the bus station in Dorchester Street; or any bus going via Radstock or Peasdown St John; and get out at Bear Flat, just beyond the pelican crossing; walk back through Hayes Place and down Holloway. If walking from the city centre, cross the river, go under the railway bridge & take the underpass under the A36, and footpath up the hill to join Holloway.
