The History of Rowner and Alver Valley

Can you learn over 5000 years of local history in just 90 minutes? We think not. But your Guide, James, will give you a informative introduction to different aspects along the walk. This should allow you a fascinating insight to the subject and maybe whet your appetite to delve deeper...
James will introduce you to:
* the Saxon settlement;
* the Norman fort;
* who the Quarr were;
* gold and axes found in what is now HMS Sultan;
* how important Rowner was for two medieval kings;
* the birth of naval flying instruction and innovative inventions;
* a quickview of the WW1 Training Trenches (only if weather time and weather permits)
and much more
On each Saturday the walk will conclude with a pop-in at Rowner Youth Arts and Media Centre (AKA The Youthy) for peek at their exhibition about the Rowner Estate spanning some 6 decades. People are welcome stay there to enjoy The Youthy event in full or follow the Guide back to the start point.

This is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with mobility impairment due to the terrain. There some rest points along the way but feel free to bring a fold-up stool or chair if you need to be seated. Within the Alver Valley Garden Centre there are toilets, including accessible, and a great Cafe.
Please arrive 15 minutes before start time. Meet your Guide to the side of the shop entrance. Lots of walking, through and along some uneven ground bordered by long grasses and gorse, also including slopes. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the terrain. Insect repellent is highly recommended, as is bringing a bottle of refreshment, and sun protection if required.
