The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration

The Greek Orthodox Church, 264 Westwood Heath Road, Coventry, West Midlands, CV4 8GP

  • 12 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

A presentation in conjunction with the Westwood history group centred on the church which was originally built as the Westwood School, functioning as such from 1872 to 1963.

The Westwood history group present a comprehensive history of the area in general, once part of the Lord Leigh estate, Stoneleigh.
The old school building was consecrated as a Greek orthodox church in 1977, approximately 2 years after its purchase from the council with its new use enthusiastically embraced by Lord Leigh.
The church presently has a considerably larger footprint than the original building but visitors can still easily relate it to its original incarnation.
2024 is a landmark year for the Coventry Greek Orthodox community being the 60th anniversary since its official inception with authority to operate as a church granted by the UK archdiocese , which in turn takes its authority from the patriarch in Constantinople.
in line with this years theme our display area in the Greek school/function hall building will reference the Cyprus connection of the 1960s diaspora & the industrialised Coventry they came to.
There will also be a charity sale of traditional Cypriot lace , to which the community has a connection.
