Woodvale and Extra-Mural Cemeteries, Lewes Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 3QB

  • 07 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

So much more than gravestones!

Take a walk through the City's grand Victorian necropolis and its beautiful grounds, full of trees and winding pathways. We will view the many monuments, mausoleums, pillars, columns, obelisks, angels, urns, and sarcophagi in the cemetery as well as the sculpted symbolism depicting art and nature. Woodvale and Extra-Mural Cemeteries have structures that reflect the social history of past eras, from Victorian Gothic to Art Nouveau, on through the Twenties and beyond! We also also view the grave of Thomas Highflyer, the rescued 12 year old slave boy.

Tour guide Sarah Tobias is lecturer in social, cultural and local history.
