The Golden Hinde
St. Mary Overies Dock, Cathedral Street, London, Greater London, SE1 9DE
Visit The Golden Hinde for free on Saturday 7 September. The full-size reconstruction of the first English ship to circumnavigate the globe is berthed beside the River Thames next to Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market.
Circumnavigating the globe was incredibly difficult in the 16th century. Under the command of Sir Francis Drake, the crew faced considerable challenges including skirmishes, storms and scurvy. When you step on board the ship, you will get the opportunity to meet some of the crew members including the navigator who will recount the astonishing journey that the original ship took, the gunner who might ask for your help loading the canons and the barber-surgeon who has many gory tales to share.
Tickets for these special free Heritage Open Day tours must be booked in advance via The Golden Hinde's website. Tours will run every half hour from 10am to 4pm (last tour at 3.30pm).
