The Generator, alongside Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend
Public and Plants, 12 Frederick Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 3BJ
We will meet at Public, the coffee shop next door in the Old Art College, where we will display photos and talk about the history, current state, and future plans for the Generator.
The Generator site is a construction zone and not safe to explore freely. As a result, our hard hard tour will not happen this year, however we will be briefly opening the doors and you can still get a glimpse inside The Generator and learn about our progress.
Pasha Kincaid, recently appointed Community Engagement Coordinator, would welcome people with memories and memorabilia about the Generator to come and talk with her.
The Generator Hall, along with The Old Art College, are the last remaining Technical College buildings from the time of Herbert Schofield - an inspirational educationalist. The College provided training as industries developed in the late 19th and early 20th Century and formed the basis for the now internationally renowned Loughborough University. The extraordinary generators (U-Boat engines salvaged after WWI), in the Generator Hall, provided electricity for the many College buildings in the centre of the town.
The builders currently occupy the building, and the building will be completed in 2025. This is a unique opportunity for a tour whilst building work is underway. Once complete, the Generator will run events, performances, programmes, exhibitions and initiatives that celebrate the richness of diversity and encourage dialogue, understanding, and connection.
