One of D H Lawrence’s childhood homes, now an authentic re-creation of a typical miners' dwelling. Lawrence lived here between 1887 and 1891 and later used it as a setting for the early part of his novel Sons and Lovers.

The Breach House, Eastwood, was one of D H Lawrence’s childhood homes. His father was a miner and the lower floor has been recreated as it would have looked during that period. The Lawrence family moved there in 1887 when Lawrence was 2 years old, and they left in 1891. It is immortalised in Lawrence’s 1913 novel Sons and Lovers. The upper floors comprise of living accommodation (not occupied) including a sitting room and a dedicated library room housing a collection of Lawrence-related literature. Visitors are welcome to browse the books and memorabilia as well as to explore the pleasant garden. No refreshments but feel free to bring your own and stay awhile. There will be knowledgeable guides on hand, or look around independently. Everyone welcome.
