Tanfield Railway

At Tanfield Railway visitors will discover the astounding inventions which helped make the early modern north east an industrial region in a pre-industrial world.

Tanfield Railway volunteers offer a warm welcome. You can purchase hot and cold refreshments from the tea rooms at East Tanfield and Andrews House. Interpretation material will be around the site for visitors to learn more about our heritage.

Marley Hill yard area and its workshops will be open for guided tours to see the restoration work of our dedicated volunteers.

Volunteers will also lead guided walks through the ancient Causey woodland to the 1725 Causey Arch while talking about the industrial history of the area and what is now the oldest railway in the world.

The Arch and the embankment are amazing engineering achievements dating back 300 years.

Tanfield Railway will be celebrating its tercentenary in 2025 and our planned reconstruction of a wooden waggonway can be viewed.

On the Sundays of our HODs, a steam train will be seen operating from East Tanfield Station, through the Causey woods to Andrews House Station and on to our northernmost station, Sunniside. The three mile line offers visitors a variety of walks and atmospheric photographic opportunities.

(Train travel is not included in this event. Tickets for train rides are via online booking on the TR website or at the railway).

Accessibility details

East Tanfield car park and station site are wheelchair friendly. Guided walks are on footpaths through Causey woods and on uneven terrain, steep steps and gradients. Ground can be slippery and muddy in wet weather. Not suitable for wheelchair users. Marley Hill site is not fully accessible to wheelchair users. Volunteer staff are always on hand to assist. Toilets are available at East Tanfield Station, Andrews House Station and Marley Hill Carriage Shed.

The Tanfield Railway is owned by a charity and operated by a not for profit company. It was saved & rebuilt by volunteers, and is being developed, maintained & operated by volunteers. We run steam hauled passenger trains every Sunday and selected other days throughout the year. We will be running trains on the Sunday Heritage Open Days. PLEASE NOTE - Train travel is not included in Heritage Open Days.
