Talk on the Ventures of Robert Stuffyn, 14th Century Wool Merchant

The Buttermarket, Middle Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1AL

  • 06 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Robert Stuffyn was a 14th century Wool Merchant who traded out of Newark. The talk concentrates on his career in wool exports, his interactions with King Edward III, Hanseatic merchants and his chantry foundations.

Given this year's HODs themes of Routes - Networks - Connections, this talk gives a chance to explore some of the connections and networks established by merchants in Newark. In particular, the cloth trade was crucial to Newark's wealth in the Middle Ages, with Flemish cloth merchants coming to Newark to help grow the industry and merchants or their agents travelling to the continent to facilitate the cloth trade.
