Talk on the history of local gardening clubs and shows: Caterham and District Horticultural Society
1 Stafford Road, Caterham, Surrey, CR3 6JG
Caterham and District Horticultural Society have been a large part of the Community in Caterham, Surrey since it was established in 1886. The Society has put on traditional shows, 3 or 4 times every year since. Except for the war years. Our hayday was when each of the gardeners of the local estates competed against each other, for our coveted cups and trophies.
We were a big part of Caterham's historical Village Fayres and locals enjoyed taking part or coming along to see the fabulous displays. Our talk will be about the long history of the Society, and the activities of the Society today. There will be plenty of local interest and broader comment on the history of local gardening clubs and shows in British Society: from the Victorian era to the present day. This year, we have created an amazing display, in the East Surrey Museum in Caterham, of some of the Society's amazing artefacts. Come and look through our records and see if your ancestors have taken part in the shows of the past.
The talk will be given by Debbie Fox, our present chair, who has put a lot of time and effort, delving into our records, researching our history, collecting photos and information from our older members to create a fabulous talk.
