Talk given by two people about free-mining

The Main Place, Old Station Way, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 8RH

  • 07 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking preferred

Paul Baverstock and Ian Jamieson will talk of their experiences in working a Forest of Dean gale owned by a local freeminer on a part time basis. There will be a power point presentation and some examples of equipment used on show.

Paul and Ian are not themselves able to register to be a freeminer as neither of them were born within the "Hundred of St. Briavels". There are no local maternity units so the person would now have to be born at home. In addition to the birth-right to become a free miner you have to work a year and a day before claiming the right.
Currently there are (???) gales registered, (??) of which are currently being worked. Freemining is not affordable as a full time employment these days, so most do so at weekends.
