A talk about the revolutionary impact of the bicycle on women, fashions and society from the 1890s

Sussex Blazing Saddles’ creative director, Karen Poley, will talk about the impact of the advent of the bicycle on women and society in the 1890s, to 1928 when women got the vote. She will talk about the role of cycling in transforming women's lives, the transformation of their clothes and its role in the suffrage movement across the UK, Sussex, Newhaven and Brighton and Hove.

Sussex Blazing Saddles has delved into local archives, created a touring pop-up exhibition, run movement workshops with bicycles, and sewing workshops to reimagine what cycling can look like for women today. The Blazing Saddles performance, based on this heritage has been present in across Sussex as well.

A second talk will be on Tuesday 3 September, 7.30pm - with Newhaven Historical Society, Hillcrest Centre, BN9 9LH
