Sussex Blazing Saddles Exhibition - Newhaven
Newhaven Library, 38 High Street, Newhaven, East Sussex, BN9 9PD
The Sussex Blazing Saddles (SBS) pop up exhibition at Newhaven Library explores the impact of the bicycle on women across Sussex from the 1890s, when bicycles first became widely available, to 1928 when women finally won the vote
The 1890s saw a huge craze for cycling &, for the first time, many women enjoyed the freedom of independence & travel. Some transformed their clothing to wear rationals or bloomers, many joined clubs & social rides across Sussex
Newhaven was a meeting point for Sussex-wide rides & held ladies bicycle races as part of annual Gymkhana, sports and sailing events
The pop up follows two years of research by voluteers & is presented as a series of themes which emerged during the research - from clothing to rides, races & events, pioneering lady bicyclists, clubs & cycling suffragists, as well as current cycling clubs & activities to help encourage more women to cycle today
Led by KP Projects CIC, Sussex Blazing Saddles is supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, Creative Newhaven & local partners, working with archives, community groups, local museums & volunteers to find forgotten stories about local pioneering women cyclists
The project culminates in September with a programme of performances, workshops, pop up displays, talks, rides, cycle training & maintenance in Newhaven & Brighton
